Dá-lhe ALL,

HTC TOUCH DIAMOND:
Unboxing e demonstração do TouchFLO 3D
(vídeo e galeria de imagens)

HTC Diamond

Our verdict on the HTC Diamond hardware (at least in it's European incarnation): GREAT. It's tiny, it has incredible screen resolution, it's snappy, and battery life is... just barely acceptable (but acceptable nontheless). We adore this little guy, it's just filled with nice and unexpected design touches. Setting the phone face down on the table to ignore a call: sweet. Having the screen turn on when you pull out the stylus: sweeter. Noticing that the outer edges of the Diamond are metal so you can just slap the magnetic stylus on the side of the device while you have it out: sweeter still. Not needing the stylus 95% of the time because the interface is designed to work with your finger both in TouchFLO 3D and even within classic WM apps: Sweetest.

More verdicts and a gallery of the HTC Diamond alone and with friends after the break!

More on the HTC Diamond

HTC Diamond

Our verdict on TouchFLO 3D, the Diamond's fancy new interface: Still a little too slow despite the fact that we're running the official ROM on it. Actually, here's the real deal: TouchFLO 3D is an great casual user interface. It's fairly 'discoverable' in that you can get how to use it fairly quickly. Although it's responsive enough, it does seem to give us fits every now and then when trying to get to a certain panel or swipe instead of tap. It's very, very pretty.

However the slight lags in the interface combined with the fact that it's not always as useful as a full interface make it tough to recommend to power users. We never went so far as to just abandon it during our testing, but we did note that when you do turn it off (it's just an option for the Today Screen), the Diamond felt like the fastest WinMo smartphone we've ever used.

One last verdict: Opera Mobile 9.5. Swoon... but maybe a stitch more resource-heavy than we'd hoped.

Go Spain!

¡Viva España!

Explanation: Spain won the EURO 2008 soccer tournament yesterday (or this morning, if you watched the TiVo-delayed broadcast). I'm partial to Spain because I met my wife there while on vacation in an island paradise. Also because the Netherlands were already eliminated from the tournament.

As I watched the game this morning and realized that I might not be able to see the whole thing, I considered posting a "Do not tell me anything about the EURO 2008 final" status message. Then I considered my readership and decided that I'd better not chance it.

Carabanchel también es España

Comparação: iPHONE vs iPHONE 3G vs SAMSUNG i900 OMNIA (por gráficos)

Dá-lhe,

iPHONE vs iPHONE 3G vs SAMSUNG i900 OMNIA

iPhone vs iPhone 3G vs Samsung Omnia

- iPhone: 115mm x 61mm x 11.6mm
- iPhone 3G: 115.5mm x 62.1mm x 12.3mm
- Samsung i900 Omnia: 112mm x 56.9mm x 12.5mm

Então, vamos aos gráficos:

Visão 3D

iPhone vs iPhone 3G vs Samsung Omnia

iPhone vs iPhone 3G vs Samsung Omnia

iPhone vs iPhone 3G vs Samsung Omnia

iPhone vs iPhone 3G vs Samsung Omnia

Dá-lhe ALL,

XPERIA X1 vs HTC Touch Pro

What do the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 and the HTC Touch Pro have in common? A lot. They're both considered high-end devices and won't be available until later this year. Both have high resolution screens, add a unique user interface (TouchFLO 3D and XPERIA Panel Interface), and have a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. So which is better? Glad you asked. Read on for a head to head...

Tamanho/Espessura

sizeasy helps us get an idea on how these devices compare in size. Seen in red, the XPERIA X1 is slightly thinner than the Touch Pro (by 1mm), but it's also taller (by 2mm) and wider (by 8mm). In terms of weight, the XPERIA comes in the lightest at 158grams (5.57oz), while the Touch Pro adds just 7 more grams to 165grams (5.82oz).

Tamanho da Tela/Resolução e PPI

The XPERIA has a 3.0", QVGA 800x480 pixel resolution screen, making for a pixel per inch density of 310. The screen on the Touch Pro is .2" smaller at 2.8", with a lower pixel per inch density of 285. Because of the difference in screen resolutions, the XPERIA X1 can display 25% more screen data at once than the Touch Pro.

Hardware

Both devices share the Qualcomm MSM7201 CPU that clocks at 528MHz. They also both have 512MB of ROM, though the Touch Pro has slightly more RAM at 288MB versus 256MB as found on the XPERIA. Both devices have 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, and a 3.1MP camera on the rear with fill flash. The Touch Pro has a NMEA GPS module built in, while the XPERIA X1 has an unknown aGPS system. The Touch Pro has TV-out, whereas the XPERIA does not. You'll get a choice of black or silver if you want an XPERIA X1, but black is your only choice for the Touch Pro. And finally, powering it all, the XPERIA X1 has a larger 1500mAh battery, while the Touch Pro's battery comes in at 1350mAh.

Interface

Both devices will run Windows Mobile 6.1. In recognition of the ugly user interface that Microsoft has left generally unchanged for years, both devices have a proprietary interface enhancements that tries to make information more easily accessible. The Touch Pro uses TouchFLO 3D, and the XPERIA X1 uses the XPERIA Panel Interface. Instead of trying to describe them, view the videos below.

Here's a walk-through of TouchFLO 3D found on the HTC Touch Diamond. We expect this experience to be identical on the Touch Pro. Though the TouchFLO 3D Today-screen replacement is undoubtedly cool and flashy, it's slow and often awkward. Power users are likely to revert back to the default Today screen once they get beyond the novelty of TouchFLO 3D.

And here's a walk-through of the XPERIA Panel Interface, as taken by the folks at MobileBurn from CTIA. Note that a pre-production unit is being demonstrated, so the animations aren't perfect and there are some software errors that occur. Can someone explain the utility of this interface to me? The panel system allows for visual representations of various screens, reminiscent of flip-3D in Windows Vista, which turned out to be a seldom-used feature. I much rather tap an icon or call up a program from the Start menu then flick through panels to launch a certain screen or application.

Preço/Disponibilidade

Sony Ericsson says to expect the XPERIA X1 "in selected markets from the second half of 2008." And HTC is giving us hazy details as well, claiming that the Touch Pro "will be available to customers across all major European, Asian and the Middle East markets in late summer. The North American and Latin American versions of Touch Pro will be available later in 2008."
As with most high end Windows Mobile handsets, Europe sees them first, and the US gets them a few weeks or months later, with the choice of paying high price to have the device imported into the US while they're still only sold in Europe. My good source tells me that you'll be able to buy a Touch Pro (triband) in July, and an XPERIA X1 (probably quadband) in September. Expected to pay around $850 for each as an unlocked phone. If you want to preorder either device (and prices are not yet available), do so via Negri Electronics.

And when will they land on US carriers, and thus be less expensive? This is what I think: the XPERIA X1 or Touch Pro will show up on AT&T in time for the holiday season 2008 (which could be as early as September). I'm putting my bets on the XPERIA X1 to go to AT&T, while HTC sells the Touch Pro as an unlocked GSM phone, or turns it CDMA and puts it on Verizon (or Sprint, though not likely).

Qual é melhor?

If I were to pick a favorite based on what we know above, I'd go for the XPERIA X1. I have to say that I'm not impressed with TouchFLO 3D (too slow) or the XPERIA Panel Interface (too pointless and too slow), so these UI enhancements are not a consideration in picking a favorite. The XPERIA has a higher resolution screen (can't wait to use Opera 9.5 on it!), plus a really neat arc slider design that not only looks cool but also tilts the screen slightly towards the user. And to boot, the XPERIA is slightly thinner and weighs less than the Touch Pro. I'm sold.

Dá-lhe ALL,

iPhone vs HTC Touch Diamond vs Xperia X1

Here's the back of all three devices. Only the X1 comes with a light for taking photos in dark situations. The Diamond is the only one which has a glossy finish which attracts fingerprints, while the other two have brushed metal textures. Do note that we have the silver version of the X1 here, which may differ in feel from the black one.

This is how they stack up (from top: Diamond, iPhone, X1). Because of its keyboard, the X1 is much thicker than the rest. While the Diamond is about the same thickness as the iPhone, it is much lighter because of the use of materials and smaller length and width. If the iPhone's weight is ideal for your use, the Diamond may seem somewhat light in your hands.

These shots are of the same hand holding the three devices. After handling the Diamond for a few days, the iPhone actually feels a little bulky because of the greater width. Though the X1 has about the same length as Apple's device, it is narrower, which gives it a sleeker front profile.

Dá-lhe ALL,

Hoje a "luta" do dia é entre:

XPERIA X1 vs iPHONE

Eis a opinão do responsável pela comparação:

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 vs Apple iPhone

In terms of pure hardware and cellular connectivity, the X1 does rather outshine the iPhone. Sony Ericsson have packed an ARM-based Qualcomm chipset running at 520MHz into their handset; now while Apple chose a CPU capable of 667MHz, so far it’s throttled back to around 500MHz to save power. If they’re roughly equal on raw grunt, it’s high-speed data access where the XPERIA X1 shines: both have WiFI, but the Sony Ericsson’s HSDPA/HSUPA easily outguns the iPhone’s EDGE connection. The X1’s WVGA 800 x 480 display is physically smaller, at 3-inches, than the iPhone’s 3.5-inch screen, but the Apple phone only manages 320 x 480 resolution.

Apple do beat the X1 on internal memory, though; out of the box the XPERIA only has 400MB, expanded via microSD card, whereas the iPhone is available in 8GB or 16GB sizes (though the memory cannot be added to via a memory card). GPS on the X1 is another point in Sony Ericsson’s favour, as is the hardware keyboard (although it does make the XPERIA 5mm thicker than the iPhone: 110 x 53 x 16.7mm for the X1, 115 x 61 x 11.6mm for the iPhone.

What will likely make the biggest difference is the software environment. Time - and sales - have shown that Apple’s intuitive and attractive mobile OS X is enough to persuade users to look beyond the shortcomings of EDGE; it’s a reputation for usability Windows Mobile would love to have. Sony Ericsson are obviously hoping that their XPERIA Panel Interface - a group of finger-friendly shortcut tiles and menus - will gloss over WM’s shortcomings, leaving us to revel in all those third-party apps (that don’t require handset hacking to install) and true push-email, but we’ll have to wait for Vincent’s hands-on video to see just how much they’ve achieved that.

Boa sorte..rs
