Hero Honda’s Q3 PAT decelerates 20%

Does the profit de-growth signal that India’s largest two-wheeler maker has hit the bumps?

Hero Honda has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in recent times. First, it was the break-up with the Japanese partner which came as a major shocker, and then uncertainty over royalty payments followed by a host of other news that hit confidence in the country’s largest two-wheeler maker. And now the news about its lower profits in the December 2010 quarter further disappoints.

The company which makes popular models such as Passion, Karizma and hugely successful Splendor, today said that its net profit fell by 20% on a year-on-year basis to Rs 429 crore during the Q3FY11, compared to Rs 535.7 crore in the same quarter a year ago, led by a sharper decline in margins to 11.2% from 17.2%, during the said period.

Reportedly, the management has warned that the company’s margins would remain under pressure in the short-term.

In contrast, arch rival, Bajaj Auto had earlier reported strong Q3 numbers for FY11, with its net profits recording y-o-y growth of over 40% to Rs 667 crore and top line jumping nearly 27% to Rs 4177 crore. This was despite a rise in the company’s raw material cost during the December 2010 quarter.

A section of market analysts have expressed concern over Hero Honda’s growth post-the termination of the 26 years long joint venture between India’s Hero Group and Japanese auto giant Honda. These have also been reports in the media about the Indian partner seeking to dilute its stake in the company.

Can IBM's LotusLive Symphony take on Microsoft Docs?

After Google Inc. onslaught on Microsoft’s Cashcow – Microsoft Office, through its Online Google Docs, Big Blue is also following the suit to compete on the Cloud through its LotusLive Symphony Suite, an online office productivity suite, which enables the users to create, edit and share the documents and spreadsheets from Lotus Live via multiple locations.

With more and more users thronging on to tablets and smartphones to connect on the social platforms, online office applications are soon to become table stakes in the coming years. According to Research firm IDC, the global market for cloud based computing is expected to triple to $1.8 billion by 2014. However, there is also

As iPad set the world on fire through its tablet, other players from Samsung, Motorola, Toshiba, Acer, LG and ZTE to Indian players like Adam and others are intensifying the competition to grab a pie, this will only augur well for the developers and cloud-computing industry who are coming up with new ways to store documents online, which has forced even Microsoft to go the Cloud computing way.

However, on the downside though, despite the rising popularity of online document management systems over cloud based computing, majority of users would still prefer the traditional way of storing data on their personal desktops/laptops, without ever worrying about the privacy and security issues that otherwise haunt online. So for now, there’s no threat to the old warhorse Microsoft Office from Microsoft’s table, which has been ruling for over 2 decades.

So watch out this space for more news and updates from the computing world.

CoCo: A New Kid on ‘Banking’ Block

A proposal by Britain’s Barclays to use CoCo as a remuneration tool is being watched closely by peers.

Don’t confuse it with a new Swiss candy or a soft drink brand. CoCo is a bold, new concept which is being explored by banks in Europe as a revolutionary tool to revamp their compensation mechanism (read: bonus). The British financial giant, Barclays is reportedly looking to issue CoCos, subject to regulatory approval, to its senior employees in a bid to overhaul its compensation strategy that could help it navigate any crisis-like situation, such as the global financial crisis of 2008, better. Crisis-hit big European and US financial institutions (remember AIG) had recently come under scathing attack from the regulators and experts for issuing fat bonuses to their senior management even as they had to be bailed out by their respective governments. Now by using CoCo as a ‘bonus currency’ (as some experts call it), the issuers might hope to buy peace with critics. However, the utility of CoCos goes beyond as a mere compensation tool as several banks in Europe are looking to issue such bonds to recapitalize them to meet tougher Basel III and regulatory norms in their own nations.

CoCos or Contingent Convertible bonds are a kind of hybrid instruments. According to David Bishop, Ethan Zuofei Liu, Patrick Murray and Téa Solomonia of State University of New York, “Contingent Convertible bonds (CoCos) are debt instruments that must transform into shares of equity or are written off upon a triggering event.” The trigger event, they suggest, could be determined either by regulatory assessment or objective bank losses. So, the bonds become effectively worthless if the financial viability (a major trigger) becomes questionable. That means the employees have every incentive to make sure their institution’s remain financially strong. It also serves as an effective recapitalization tool if the issuer’s tier-I capital falls below a threshold or specified limit.

So far, two financial institutions which have issued CoCos include Lloyds Bank and another by Rabobank. In case of Lloyd Bank which issued these bonds in November 2009, the conversion is contingent upon the trigger event of Core Tier 1 leverage ratio falling below five per cent, while in case of Rabobank, in case trigger event happens it would lead to write-off of 25% of the principal amount.
“[They] are interesting as a pay device on two counts,” FT quoted a leading European banker as saying, who further added, “They (CoCos) give an employee downside and don’t incentivize strategies that would ramp the share price in the short term, as equity can. At the same time, they could count towards core capital.”

As regulators and bankers across the globe look for preemptive measures to prevent a repeat of the 2008 financial cataclysm, CoCos appear as a ray of hope. But will they deliver? “An inherent problem within banking finance is the risk of panic: when a bank needs to convert hybrid debt into equity, it sends a clear signal to investors that the bank is in trouble. These investors are then tempted to withdraw their investments, making the initial problem much worse. CoCo bonds are emerging as the most concrete new idea for solving these inherent problems,” comments peo.cambridge.org.

However, CoCos do suffer some drawbacks. A major concern about CoCo’s effectiveness is about the trigger event. According to Prof. Theo Vermaelen of the prestigious INSEAD, France, is that “how should the trigger be set?” “In the case of Lloyds the trigger is based on regulatory capital ratios, which are only computed once every quarter. Such a mechanism will not work in a situation where a bank capital structure deteriorates rapidly,” he writes in his article, “Message to Basel: Another way to avoid bank bailouts,” published in Wall Street Journal. “For example, Citibank had a Tier 1 capital ratio that was measured at 11.8 per cent in December 2008, at the height of the financial crisis. This means debt holders are not likely to get their money back, which makes the bonds very expensive, and reduces their attractiveness as an alternative to simply issuing equity.” He proposes a new framework, Call Option Enhanced Reverse Convertible or COREC in which the trigger is based on market values, and not "old" capital ratios and also, the design protects equity holders against dilution caused by manipulation and/or market panic.

Whatever, European banks, for now, it seems, are liking CoCos.

How to Set Yourself Up for Promotion

When are you next up for promotion?

LinkedIn released interesting data recently about the best months of the year to get a promotion. In the United States, the most popular months are January, June, and July. Since June and July are right around the corner, now's a good time to think about how to set yourself up for good news.

Of course, a promotion isn't automatic. You have to prove that you're a problem-solver who is ready to take on more responsibilities, and that you've worked hard to deserve that next step.

Here are a few areas to focus on that will help you climb the corporate ladder this year:

1. Build relationships.

Just like most job opportunities occur through referrals, your next promotion is likely to be influenced by how well your colleagues perceive you and your work. In addition to your smarts, problem-solving abilities, and an accomplished track record, your relationships within the company will help pave your way to the next level.

[See How Perfectionism Hurts Your Career.]

2. Demonstrate your value to the company.

In as much detail a possible, keep a record of how your efforts have helped the company. Take note of all of your accomplishments as they happen and quantify them. Show how you saved your company $100,000 or reduced spending by a certain percentage, and record these accomplishments regularly. If not, you risk forgetting them. These notes will not only help you build a better case for a promotion, they'll also set you up for a solid transition to a new company when it comes time to take that route.

3. Ask for it.

Don't sit around waiting for your manager to offer you new opportunities. Your career progression isn't his top priority; it's only your top priority. Make an effort to ask for more responsibility and show your company that you're ready and interested to learn new skills. And when you ask for what you want, be prepared with to make a strong case for yourself by showing your value to the company and having co-workers who support you.

[For more career advice, visit U.S. News Careers, or find us on Facebook or Twitter.]

4. Keep score online.

Use online tools to stay in front of your boss, mentors, and colleagues who will help you move along your career path. Experts at LinkedIn suggest one way of doing this is to document the milestones in your career by requesting quality recommendations. If a client praises you for your work on a specific project, ask if they feel comfortable writing you a recommendation on LinkedIn. Not only does it look good on your profile, but your network will be notified of your recent recommendation, which reminds them what a great job you're doing.
