“Be Fearful When Others Are Greedy And Greedy When Others Are Fearful” - Warren Buffett

One of my favorite investment philosophies comes from a statement made by the great Warren Buffett that states “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful”. Without thinking, this may sound like some old man trying to be a great philosopher saying something that has no real meaning to it. But actually it is the exact opposite.

Although sounding very elementary, I quickly realized that this statement is deeper than what many human beings can comprehend without a second or third look. In my opinion, what Mr. Buffett is saying closely correlates to a statement made by Sun Tzu in The Art of War, that states "when the enemy attacks; retreat and when the enemy retreat; attack".

Generally when the stock market is having a great year (or week for that matter), many amateur investors become greedy and are lured by the possibilities of great gains, then of course come to the conclusion that it is now the perfect time to invest. When the rest of the world starts investing at this high point in the market, the seasoned investors generally retreat, as it can be said that the amateurs are now attacking. Although they attack with no real substance and can be defeated at any time, it is always better (easier) to destroy the enemy once they are in your territory, and thus out of their element.

Most amateur investors don’t understand market and economic cycles, let alone P/E ratios or Earnings per share data, but still you have millions of amateur investors in the stock market each year, whom nonetheless retreat once they realized that they are out of their element. They realize that they are out of their element once they begin to see massive loses, and can’t figure out why.

Now don’t get me wrong. We all lose sometimes, but when you lose and can’t figure out why you’re losing, that is a sign that you are out of your element, thus a place where you don’t need to be.

Once the amateur investors start retreating (selling off their investments below market value), the seasoned investors follow Sun Tzu’s advice and attack. When they attack, since the enemy is outside of their element and in the seasoned investors territory, the blow is fatal and often financially advance the seasoned investors, while setting the amateur investor back to a place where he or she did not want to be.

When the stock price starts to decline, the amateur investors start selling their investments at very low prices, which gives all the seasoned investors a chance to buy back their investments that they originally sold to the amateur investors when the market was at a peak, now at very low prices.

The way it works is this: the rich sell for $8, which means the poor buys for $8. Then when the stock price decreases to $6, the amateur sells it back to the rich, who of course now pays $6 for it back. Then when the stock price goes back to $8, the rich sell it to the poor again, which means the poor pays $8 again. Then when the price decreases back to $6, the amateur gets nervous again and sells it back to rich for $6.

Believe it or not, this happens all the time and is one of the many reasons why the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. This is one of the main reasons for the need for education in the fields of business and investing.

dondon83
Tada.. the long awaits sony a700 successor? the a77? the semi pro dslr or dslt (Translucent). from the picture. we can see the selling point of this camera.

Translucent Technology,
which lead to faster FPS.which i not a fans of it,i still prefer old fashion Optical View Finder anyway..heard a77 view finder would be something special? let wait for it.

Exmor Sensor,
i was convinced by the ISO performance by a55. and i believe in a77 would be better. what i always wanted.. better ISO performance.

AVCHD Video recording.
erm... no comment about this 1, i doubt i will use it for recording.. it's as a bonus, in case need to record a HD video of something photo unable to describe?

dondon83
here 's the first Transparent body SLT, possible working prototype of a77. let start guessing what sony would deliver from the the picture. :D from the picture above, we can see the D.O.F Preview is back! and the Infrared AF light.(which both doesn't exist in my old a300)

dondon83
form this pic, we can see.. there is a mount(of course), the blank mode Dial.. PASM123? or preset mode? hmph... i hope i just hope there is a MR(MemoryRecall) still there.

dondon83
hmph.. rumors saids a77 will support Compact Flash, Memory Stick Pro Duo, and SD card. judge from the image.. it maybe only Memory Stick and SD card.. oh.. i'm excited when i saw this picture. why? coz it's got a Tiltable LCD !!! that what i always hope for. great!!! another thing i wish to have. is the Dual Dial (for aperture and shutter). great!!

dondon83
the top Info Panel.. hmph.. with my a300, i always look at my LCD, so the top panel i believe not that attract me, but anyway let leave it till the final production, and see how it goes. there is 4 button on top, make me remind Canon 50D button arrangement. hmph.. and the Nikon Power Switch.. i kinda like old Minolta Style Power Switch. and there is Mic Hole on top of the camera. and i believe this model doesn't come with Weather Sealed.

dondon83

Key Feature i expecting from my next Sony Camera :
- Build In Super Steady Shot (it's a Must)
- Great ISO performance. (i want usable ISO above 1600)
- Customizable Auto ISO Range (a300 preset to 100 - 400)
- Faster Focusing Speed. (a300 is kinda slow...)
- Dual Dial for Aperture and Shutter.(time to train my thumb :D)
- Tilt-able Screen for Live View.(i use this a lot, so that why i want it)
- Auto ISO on Manual Mode. (currently, once switch to manual, everything is manual..)
- AF assist Light for lowlight photography(my a300 uses Multiple Flash).
- Bigger and Better View Finder. - faster Shutter Speed, like... 1/8000 :D

hope to see these in this baby.let's wait for the birth of it.

Low Maintenance

Seven thousand birthday gifts. Her favorites? A night light and a lollipop.

Explanation: My little girl just turned two. She had a very happy birthday (which somehow has stretched across three parties) and based on the pictures, her gift volume exceeded her personal volume. Anyway, the big winners were a lollipop and a night light that changes colors. Mental note: Keep the budget lower next year.

SIBOR vs SOR mortgage loans

This is going to be quite technical, but here goes:

SIBOR (Singapore Interbank Offered Rate) is a daily reference rate based on the interest rates at which banks offer to lend unsecured funds to other banks in the Singapore wholesale money market (or interbank market).

SOR (Swap Offer Rate) is the effective cost of borrowing SGD synthetically through borrowing USD for 3 months and swap out the USD in return for SGD for the same maturity.

The Association of Banks in Singapore is the fixing authority for both rates.

Some of the differences between the two:

1. SIBOR is determined by the demand and supply of funds in the Singapore interbank market, whereas SOR is more influenced by external factors such as USD interest and exchange rates.

2. SOR tends to be more volatile because exchange rates and USD money market rates are more volatile.

3. SOR has been relatively lower than SIBOR for over a year, but is less stable. For example the 3-Month SIBOR is currently 0.44% while the 3-Month SOR is 0.27%.

As to which one you should take, if you’d like to go for the cheapest rate you can consider the SOR pegged loan, but if you want a rate that is less volatile you can consider the SIBOR one.

But honestly, I think the difference between the two is marginal. Also, no one can predict where these interest rates will go in the future or what the correlation between the two will be like.
