“Should I hire someone to write my resume?”

Hiring a professional resume service can be useful, but use caution. Resumes can be highly subjective and there are many decisions to be made as far as what bits of information to include or leave out, the formatting and even what type of resume to use.

Hiring a professional can help you sort through these options and make it much easier to end up with a crisp document that directs the reader's attention appropriately and is still suitable for the various technologies associated with the modern, online job search.

On the other hand, often when someone else writes your resume, they might use terms or phrases with which you may not be comfortable. One definite caution is not to let your resume writer fill your resume with entries that are inaccurate or misleading.

Another thing to keep in mind is that writing a resume is excellent preparation for interviewing. When you allow someone else to do the thinking on the resume for you, you are not doing that thinking yourself. Sitting in an interview answering questions about a resume and job history you did not write can lead to complications.

A best practice when it comes to resumes is tailoring your resume to match the job or industry for which you are applying. If the opportunity uses specific wording or phrases, try to insert some of these into your resume. This tactic sparks recognition with the recruiter and can compel them to take a deeper look at you as a candidate.
